Short on time? Jump ahead

As long as technology exists in the spaces it does, like the internet and the cloud, passwords will always be necessary.

We have been changing them up in recent years, like using fingerprints or facial recognition to get into some devices; otherwise, passwords remain largely the same for most programs or website accounts.

Trying to pick a password the website or service will accept is a task. Remembering what you chose is another problem entirely.

One site may require a certain amount of letters, numbers, and unique characters, while another asks for a mix of upper- and lower-case letters.

Having different passwords for different sites is a security best practice, but it’s useless if you can’t remember them. That is where password managers come in to save the day.

What are password managers?

chrome password manager on blurred background
Image: KnowTechie

As its name suggests, a password manager is a system that keeps track of all your passwords.

The manager is a program that stores the passwords and sometimes auto-fills them in when you’re logging into sites, thanks to browser extensions.

On the surface, a password manager may sound like a bad idea. If all your passwords are available in one spot, and a single password is all that stands between them and a hacker attaining access, there seems to be little point.

However, as long as you use a unique password for the manager itself, there’ll be no problems.

The manager will even help you discover new ways to make stronger passwords, providing additional layers of security rather than peeling them away.

Many managers encrypt themselves across various devices, so you can take the program anywhere.

How to create secure passwords

Image: KnowTechie

A manager can go a long way, but having a strong password on your accounts can be invaluable against malicious activity.

A secure password should ideally be longer than 12 characters and contain a mix of letters, numbers, symbols, and spaces.

You should also avoid password reset questions that ask for any personal information that might be easy to find on social media.

Two-factor authentication is among the most secure mobile authentications, which can also come in handy. Passwords could still get stolen or decrypted, so ensuring your login takes multiple steps can save your accounts.

E-mail or text verifications are common, fast, and easy. Using these with a password manager can give you extra security.

The best free password managers

Managers aren’t difficult to come by, but what if you don’t have time to wade through them all and find the best one for you? This list contains the best password managers for you to try for free.

Safety and Security

These days, password managers are automatically available on our devices or browsers, so there’s no excuse not to use them.

Apple products with iOS 11 or higher have them by default, and Chrome allows users access to one built into the browser.

Even the best free password managers can be a mixed bag if you don’t take proper safety measures to begin with. But they can offer a lot more security when used correctly.

If you’re on the fence, try one of these free password managers or one already on your device and see what all the fuss is about for yourself.

How we make our picks

We looked at many different things when choosing the best free password manager. But ultimately, it comes down to first-hand experience with the apps.

On top of hands-on testing, we spent hours scouring the internet for user reviews, Reddit posts, and YouTube videos, dedicating countless hours to making the best list possible.

But mainly, our first-hand experience is ultimately how we made our picks.

Sony released the PlayStation 5 near the end of 2020, and the console has been a huge success, becoming the best-selling console in the US.

Now, Sony has introduced its new VR system, the PS VR2.

PS VR2, or PlayStation VR2, is the aptly named successor to Sony’s original PSVR headset from 2016. And with the improvement in the performance of the PS5 over the PS4, the PS VR2 looks like a major step up.

READ MORE: Sony has opened up preorders for the PS VR2

We first learned about the existence of the new PS VR2 back in February. Since then, we’ve learned a lot about the upcoming VR headset through the company’s various patent filings, leaks, and revelations.

Short on time? Jump ahead

What is Sony’s PS VR2?

The PS VR2 is Sony’s next entry into the virtual reality gaming market. The company released the original PSVR back in 2016. The headset was received pretty well by PS4 gamers.

Now, Sony is stepping things up and utilizing the upgraded power of its latest console, the PS5, to bring an entirely new VR system to the console.

Sony is designing the PS VR2 system specifically for the PS5, taking advantage of everything the console offers.

PS VR2 consists of an all-new VR headset alongside newly designed controllers with tons of technology and features that could elevate console VR to a new level.

PS VR 2 release date

UPDATE 11/2/2022 10:28 AM ET: Sony announced the PS VR2’s release date. It launches on February 22, 2023, matching earlier rumors of the release window. Pre-orders go live on November 15.

A leak from the popular and generally reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Sony plans to start mass production of the PS VR2 in late 2022.

The report says that the company will produce around 1.5 million units in the second half of 2022, with a release date likely in early 2023.

And more recently, in August 2022, Sony shared an update with a release window.

Like Ming-Chi Kuo predicted, the company plans on releasing the PS VR2 sometime in early 2023.

That matches Kuo’s prediction of an early 2023 release and mass production beginning in late 2022. But we all know that gaming hardware releases don’t always follow schedules.

Hopefully, Sony isn’t being too bold with its early 2023 release window. We can’t wait to see what the next generation of PlayStation VR looks like.

The new PS VR2 headset

playstation vr2
Image: Sony

Maybe the most key piece of hardware that will come with the PS VR2 is a brand-new headset.

Sony has learned from the original PSVR and built an all-new VR headset with impressive specs.

In fact, Oculus founder, Palmer Lucky, recently got his hands on one and was “blown away” by Sony’s upcoming VR headset.

“I was blown away when I used PSVR 2 recently,” Lucky said in a response to a tweet from the head of PlayStation Indies, Shuhei Yoshida.

4K resolution

Sony’s PS VR2 features an impressive 4K resolution, a significant improvement over the 1080P resolution offered by the original PSVR.

Each lens will be 2000×2040 with a refresh rate of 120hz, bringing the headset in line with the PS5 console.

The headset will use a combination of foveated rendering and flexible scaling resolution to optimize resolution in areas of focus.

Eye trackers in the headset will track where you are looking, so the device can optimize resolution in that area.

The company is also adding a lens adjustment dial, so you can decide how far away the screen is. And, of course, there’s a vent to help ensure those screens don’t fog up.

Built-in motor and cameras

ps vr2 scanning feature patent
Image: Game Rant

In addition to the upgraded 4K resolution, the PS VR2 has added other new technologies to deliver a better VR experience.

The headset will use built-in cameras to monitor hand and controller movements. This eliminates the need for any external equipment to track your hands.

A small rotary motor is also included in the headset to allow for small vibrations to increase game immersion.

For example, you might be able to feel your character’s pulse in suspenseful situations.

And Sony added all of this to the headset and still promises to deliver a lighter-weight device than the original.

Gamers don’t want to wear a heavy, bulky headset to play games, so it’s nice to see that keeping the PS VR2 headset light is a priority for Sony.

Detachable cable

playstation vr2 headset and controllers
Image: Sony

One convenient feature was revealed in July of 2022.

As revealed in a video from YouTube channel PSVR2 Without Parole, the PS VR2 will have a new cable setup. Sony’s VR headset will feature a single, detachable cable this time.

This might not seem like a huge deal, but it’s a significant improvement over the double cable setup of the original PSVR headset.

In addition to only requiring a single cable connection, the cable will be removable and replaceable.

With the original PSVR, a broken cable meant you had to replace the entire machine. But on PS VR2, if you break the cable, you can easily replace it with a new one.

Of course, there are limits. The cable will be a proprietary USB-C connection. That means you’ll have to use a specific cable instead of just any USB-C you have.

Still, it’s nice to know that breaking the cord on the PS VR2 won’t mean you’ll need to buy a whole new headset.

Embedded camera for 3D mapping and see-through view

In late July, Sony shared more details about its new headset. This time, the company gave gamers a first look at the PS VR2’s embedded front cameras.

The cameras are used for a see-through view and to map your playing area. See-through mode lets you see your surroundings while your headset is still on.

With the press of a button, you’ll be able to switch between seeing what’s on the screen and your surroundings.

Plus, the headset will use those cameras to map out your physical playing environment.

Using a combination of the embedded cameras and your PS VR2 controllers, you can quickly map out your gaming room to avoid running into furniture or other obstacles.

This update also included information on two other features: broadcasting yourself while in VR and cinematic mode for non-VR media on the headset.

You’ll be able to use a PS5 HD Camera to record yourself while VR gaming so you can share it with your friends.

Additionally, PS VR2 will include a cinematic mode for non-VR content.

That mode displays at 1920×1080, as opposed to the standard 4000×2040 (2000×2040 in each eye) in VR content.

PS VR2 controllers

sony ps vr2 controllers
Image: Sony

In addition to the new headset, the PS VR2 system brings new controllers to the fold.

Designed with ergonomics in mind, the PS VR2 Sense controllers are a unique take that should feel pretty familiar to PlayStation fans.

Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers

Sony’s upcoming PS VR2 Sense controllers use a two-piece design to keep you moving freely inside of VR games.

And, like the DualSense controllers released for the PS5, they’ll both have haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Haptic feedback is a staple in most gaming controllers. And it would feel like something was missing if it wasn’t added to the PS VR2 Sense controllers.

With haptic feedback, controllers vibrate based on in-game stimulation, so every encounter feels more immersive.

As for adaptive triggers, that’s something that Sony recently introduced with its DualSense controllers. The triggers on the PS VR2 Sense controllers will react to players’ actions in-game.

For example, if you’re firing a weapon, the adaptive triggers could bounce back and provide various resistance levels to simulate a weapon’s kick.

Finger tracking and familiar button layout

playstation 5 psvr controllers
Image: KnowTechie

Sony designed the PS VR2 with the best ergonomics possible in mind.

Players’ hands will slide comfortably through the circular design of the controller to rest in a sweet spot that fits the curves of your hand.

Additionally, the controllers feature a button layout that should feel familiar to both gamers. In addition to the adaptive triggers, each controller features three buttons and a joystick.

Two of those buttons are similar to the four shape buttons on the DualSense controller. And the final button on each controller looks to be an interface button.

The controllers also have finger sensors underneath where your hands will rest. These sensors will help tell which user is using the device. They’ll also help track the location of each controller.

What will power the PSVR 2?

Sony has tapped MediaTek to power the PSVR 2 headset. We had an earlier rumor to go on, but MediaTek just confirmed things at its own Executive Summit.

That’s the first time MediaTek has been put into a VR headset, which historically uses competing Qualcomm processors. The chips used in the PSVR 2 are custom and are used in several parts of the hardware.

That probably means at least one processor in the headset to handle the processing of the new-to-PSVR optical solutions and possibly one chip in each controller. With MediaTek powering roughly 70% of the smart TV market, it’s a safe bet the PSVR 2 visual quality will be impressive.

How much will the PS VR2 cost?

Earlier reports had pointed to the device being priced at or above $399.99, the initial price of the original PSVR headset.

Those were mostly accurate, as Sony will launch the PS VR2 for $549.99 in the U.S., €599.99 in the European Union, and £529.99 in the U.K.

What games will be available on PS VR2?

Of course, where would any VR headset be without games to play. There are hundreds of VR options for the original PS VR device.

But we don’t know if most of those games will have backward compatibility or not.

UPDATE 9/16/2022 1:30 PM ET: It has now been confirmed by Sony that original PlayStation VR games will NOT work with the PS VR2.

PlayStation recently revealed that the new PS VR2 headset would launch with more than 20 “major” titles already available. These titles will consist of both first and third-party games.

And we have already had a few games confirmed to be coming to the new platform.

Horizon Call of the Mountain is another entry to the popular Horizon franchise that was the first game announced for the upcoming PS VR2.

Another game currently in development for the device is Runner, an action racing game.

Other games confirmed for development on the PS VR2 include Low-Fi, a cyberpunk action game, and Samurai Slaughter House, a stylized action RPG.

resident evil village screenshot

During the Sony State of Play event in June 2022, the company revealed a few more games that will be coming to the PS VR2 headset.

The presentation revealed three new titles: Resident Evil Village, The Walking Dead: Sinners and Saints – Chapter 2: Retribution, and No Man’s Sky.

There are likely even more games already in development for the device.

Sony will likely plan the release of the PS VR2 so that there are plenty of games to enjoy. And 20+ “major” titles are definitely a good place to start.

UPDATE 1/20/2022: PlayStation revealed 13 new PS VR2 titles that are are coming with the PS VR2. It also shared a list of 37 games that launch within a month of the headset’s launch date. Dive deeper here: PS VR2 is launching with more than 30 games

New PS VR2 trailer revealed in September

As of September 22, 2022, Sony has released a new trailer highlighting Horizon Call of the Mountain gameplay, as well as some new details about the hardware.

Where can you order the PS VR2?

As of now, there’s no way to actually order the PS VR2.

Chances are, Sony will do a pre-order program through its website closer to when the headset comes out, but nothing has been announced yet. We’ll update this section when we hear more.

And that’s everything that we know about Sony’s upcoming PS VR2 for PS5.

We will continue to update this article as we learn more about the new virtual reality headset. But for now, the PS VR2 is starting to look like a pretty impressive device.

The PS VR2 is coming at the end of February, and PlayStation has confirmed that it will have more than 30 games at launch.

PlayStation recently shared a blog post revealing 13 new PS VR2 titles. It also shared a list of 37 games that launch within a month of the headset’s launch date.

The company originally revealed 11 PS VR2 games in November. And early rumors suggested that there would be more than 20 combined first and third-party games to play at launch.

ps vr2 launch window games lineup

Now it looks like that number is even higher. The launch window includes some impressive IPs that should help PS VR2 gain traction.

Popular titles like Horizon Call of the Mountain, No Man’s Sky, and Resident Evil Village will be available on the new VR console.

Additionally, the popular PlayStation-exclusive racing simulator, Gran Turismo 7, is getting a VR upgrade.

Joining those games are several indie games, along with plenty of upgrades and new titles that should give gamers a ton of variety to choose from.

There’s always a struggle for content when a new gaming console is released. Luckily, the new PS VR2 headset won’t be lacking in games and content within a month of its release on February 22.

After months of talking about it, Netflix is finally planning to crack down on password sharing ‘more broadly’ in the coming months.

Password sharing was a major focus in the company’s latest earnings report (PDF) published this week.

“Later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly,” reads the report. And this shouldn’t come as a surprise to those keeping up with Netflix news.

In March of last year, Netflix started its movement to clamp down on password sharing. It began testing ways to slow password sharing in Latin America, with an extra fee of $2.99 for any account sharing passwords with another home.

The streaming giant has been struggling slightly in the last 12 months, losing many subscribers throughout the last year.

It even lost the top spot among streaming platforms to Prime Video for the first time since its launch.

And this crackdown could see the platform continue to lose customers. But the company thinks the change will lead to more revenue in the future.

With more revenue from less password sharing, Netflix can continue to produce original content to separate itself from the competition.

Management hopes that that will, in turn, entice more users into signing up for their own accounts.

The company didn’t share any dates, but “later in Q1” means we could see changes implemented sometime around March.

Nevertheless, look out for the inevitable end of using your buddy’s Netflix account for free.

Saving cost is one of the key ways of managing and growing a business. And one of the best ways to do so is by using virtual offices.

This is an absolute no-brainer for smart entrepreneurs starting or expanding their businesses. As opposed to physical offices, virtual offices are cheaper to operate.

With a virtual office, you get a physical office address without a long-term lease and administrative and general overhead associated with running a traditional office.

In addition to providing a physical office location, virtual office providers like Icon Offices often offer a range of additional business services.

These include setting up your business, opening a banking account, answering services, and mail forwarding.

So, what are virtual offices?

Virtual offices offer you all the benefits of a physical office for a fraction of the cost without the hassle of running a physical office.

With a virtual office, you can maintain a business presence in multiple locations while working from home anywhere in the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the need for smart businesses to operate virtual offices that can run remotely.

In this article, you’ll learn more about the benefits of virtual offices, why entrepreneurs love them, and how to get a virtual office for your business.

Who can use virtual offices?

As mentioned earlier, anyone anywhere can open a virtual office in any location where virtual office services are available.

It’s so easy and convenient to set up a virtual office that you can be up and running in minutes.

For instance, you can live in the US and still open virtual offices in the UK without even stepping foot in London.

A good virtual office provider can adequately represent your business interests, even in your absence.

If you’re wondering why entrepreneurs and business owners love the idea of virtual offices, the answer is not far-fetched.

Not only are virtual offices cost-effective, convenient, and easy to manage, but they also offer so much more.

The best part is that you can use virtual office services in your locality or while expanding your business operation overseas.

Here are the benefits of virtual offices that entrepreneurs love.

  1. Low startup cost (save on rent, furnishing, and office equipment).
  2. Low operational cost.
  3. Zero/low overhead (with the elimination of redundancy).
  4. No staff turnover.
  5. No long leases or long-term commitments.
  6. Adds legitimacy (and increases trust with local businesses, partners, and customers).
  7. Office-on-demand (pick-and-mix-office services).
  8. Access to a global yet localized talent pool (virtual assistants/receptionists, etc).
  9. No HR headaches.
  10. Leverage (using other people’s resources).
  11. International business expansion (with a strong local presence).
  12. Save on relocation.
  13. Foreign banking accounts.
  14. Local virtual phone numbers (compatible with third-party apps and services such as WhatsApp).
  15. Call answering and forwarding.
  16. Mail forwarding addresses.
  17. Zero commutes (with fewer greenhouse gas emissions).
  18. Work remotely.
  19. Physical meeting venue (when visiting).
  20. Ease of closure/shutdown.

Disadvantages of virtual offices

Just as there are benefits, there are also certain disadvantages of using a virtual office. These drawbacks depend on how you intend your virtual office.

They include:

  1. Less cohesiveness with overseas operations.
  2. Risk of ruining your overseas business with sub-par services.
  3. Add-on services (that may quickly add up).
  4. Telephone answering and videoconferencing may experience occasional connectivity issues.
  5. Restricted access on weekends, holidays, or after-work hours.
  6. Not suitable for all business types.

However, you can easily surmount these challenges with a reputable and trusted virtual office provider like Icon Offices.

The best energy-saving tech (2023) https://knowtechie.com/best-energy-saving-tech-2022/ https://knowtechie.com/best-energy-saving-tech-2022/#respond Thu, 19 Jan 2023 20:17:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=195517 Want to save energy and money? Of course you do.

The post The best energy-saving tech (2023) appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Our world is pretty awesome, and we could all do more to take care of it, like using energy-saving tech to limit our use of natural resources.

Whether turning your light bulbs off via voice assistant when you’re not in the room or automatically turning off your sprinkler, small changes can make a big difference in the long run.

That could be as small of a change as using a reusable shopping bag for groceries. Think of how much oil and energy are needed to make a disposable plastic bag and get it to the register.

On the tech front, many products are available that can help reduce your energy use while saving some money.

From battery backups and thermostats that learn your routine, we’ve gathered the best energy-saving tech available in 2023.

The best energy-saving tech for 2023

Energy-saving tech is easier on the planet, on you, and on your wallet. That’s a triple threat against climate change, and we’re here for it.

Here are some of our favorite energy-saving tools and gadgets.

Eve systems

eve systems aqua and energy strip

Apple users will love Eve Systems and their premium HomeKit-connected tech. I’ve got it all around my house to turn off my tech when I forget.

I use the Energy Strip with its triple sockets to manage my TV and other A/V equipment when I’m not using it, and it’s Siri-compatible.

The best device for me is the Eve Aqua, which lets me schedule when my sprinkler system goes on and off, so my newly laid turf doesn’t wither away.

Google Nest Thermostat

For years, I’ve had a Nest-Learning Thermostat controlling my central air system.

I always hated getting up to change the dial on the thermostat, and now I can do it from my smartphone or ask my voice assistant to change it.

I’ve also saved money because it knows when I leave the house and will change the temperature to use less energy while I’m not home.

Yes, it’s expensive to buy at first. That said, the Nest paid for itself within a few months, and it’s the first thing I’d suggest to reduce your energy use.

Amazon offers another smart thermostat option.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat saves customers an estimated $50 annually on energy bills. It’s ENERGY STAR certified with a focus on energy savings.

Plus with Alexa capabilities, you have unprecedented control of your home temperature. Easily change controls on the go with the Alexa app.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat is more affordable than Google Nest at just $79.99.

There is almost no reason to have a gas generator for emergencies these days, with battery banks and solar panels being cheaper than ever.

Itehil’s power station gives you 500Wh of storage, with two 120V AC sockets to keep your most important tech running in the event you lose power.

It’s portable too, so it’s perfect for camping trips when you want to unplug, but not all the way. Bundle one with solar panels so you never have to worry about finding a wall socket.

LED lightbulbs from Philips Hue

LED lighting is one of the most eco-friendly things you can add to your house. They last longer than traditional bulbs, so they stay out of the landfill. They’re more energy-efficient, so they use less power.

You can even get ones like the Philips Hue range that are wirelessly controlled, allowing you to change the color and the brightness or even schedule their on/off times.

The best part for me? You can ask your voice assistant to turn off the bulbs if you forget before you leave the room.

Wyze offers a similar array of smart light bulbs that can help cut down on electricity costs.

They’re compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa. You can use your assistant to turn Wyze lightbulbs on and off with just your voice.

And you can set timers and schedules, so you only have light when needed. You can automatically turn off all lights when you leave the house and have them turn on to greet you when you get back.

Wyze offers a wide range of lightbulbs starting at around $15 for a 2-pack.

Pale Blue rechargeables

Rechargeable batteries are one way to reduce your waste profile drastically. Unlike traditional NiCad tech, Lithium-based batteries don’t suffer from memory effects or weirdness when they’re at lower charge levels.

Pale Blue’s Lithium rechargeable batteries take things one step further, by packing the charging circuit into the battery.

You only need a USB cable to recharge, so no more lugging bulky chargers around. I’ve been using their batteries for a year and am slowly replacing all my other rechargeables because they’re just that good.

Sense home energy monitor

Maybe you’d rather know what in your house uses energy, so you can plan your own methods for reducing their usage.

Sense mounts in your breaker box, and over time, learns which of your appliances and other electrical devices are doing, well, whatever they do.

Primarily telling you how much energy everything uses, you can also keep informed about when they’re using it. With a whole-house picture of your energy use, you can reduce your footprint and save money.

Amazon Smart Plug

A smart plug is a great way to better manage the energy draw from your appliances, and Amazon has a perfect option.

Enabled with Alexa support, you can use the Amazon Smart Plug to set schedules for various appliances that you keep plugged in.

You can have it keep your microwave completely powered down at night when you’re not using it, then have it come on in the morning when you’re ready to heat things up.

You can set a schedule for any device using an Amazon Smart Plug, allowing for the most efficient use of energy in your home.

Tesla has their own wall plug for electric vehicles (EV), but what if you own another brand of EV or everyone in the family has a different car?

ChargePoint’s Home Flex is the answer, with a 16 to 50-amp wall charger that works with every EV. We like that. Everyone likes what they like, and what’s the point of green tech if not everyone can use it?

EcoFlow Delta Pro

Having a battery backup around for emergency use is great. The unfortunate part is that you usually have to charge them from the wall, with energy that you have no control over the generation of.

The Ecoflow Delta Pro allows you to charge it up from mounted solar panels, movable solar panels, or even a gas generator in a pinch.

The wider ecosystem adds extra battery power, monitoring, and even the ability to wire it into your home to work as a backup if your neighborhood has an outage.

We really appreciate the ability to choose where your energy comes from and where it goes.

Fossil fuels are a huge source of pollution. For short trips, maybe consider an electric scooter like this stylish Neon. With a top speed of 16 mph and a 25-mile range, it’s perfect for running errands.

We particularly like the fact that Okai is tried and tested very well. How? They’re the OEM for many ride-sharing scooter companies like Bird or Lime.

If they can survive rental use, imagine how sturdy they’ll be for you.

One of the best things you can do to save energy is to switch to a reusable water bottle. The PureVis from Larq is coated stainless steel so it’ll handle being thrown around.

The best part about it, though, is inside the cap. That’s a UV-C LED that cleans your water while you’re not drinking it, so you never have to worry about bacteria or other germs.

Shrink your footprint while adding convenience with energy-saving tech

Whether you want to make your home an oasis of eco-friendly technology or hate turning off light bulbs, we hope you’ve seen something that could fit into your life.

That could involve monitoring your energy usage to change your habits. Or even automating your energy savings, so technology saves you money.

These picks are our favorite of the best energy-saving tech we’ve used to date. We’ll revisit this frequently to ensure that our picks still make sense or add to them as we see better options.

Our planet isn’t going away any time soon, but we could all do more to look after it.

Instagram has a Quiet mode that lets you turn off notifications and ignore the platform during certain hours of the day.

With Quiet mode enabled, Instagram will block all of your notifications. It will also send an automated DM reply and change your status to show others you have Quiet mode enabled.

You can set up Quiet mode through the settings in the app. The platform will also suggest that teens turn on Quiet mode after they’ve spent a certain amount of time on the app.

Additionally, you can adjust the hours for automatic Quiet mode, similar to the Do-Not-Disturb mode found on most smartphones. Keep reading to learn how to set it up.

How to turn on Quiet mode on the Instagram app

Fortunately, Instagram makes it pretty easy to turn on Quiet mode. The feature is in the settings and enabled with a simple toggle switch.

  1. Head to your profile and tap the three-line menuinstagram profile three line menu

  2. Select Settingsinstagram settings button

  3. Tap Notificationsinstagram settings notification button

  4. Select the Quiet mode optioninstagram notifications quiet mode option

  5. Toggle Quiet mode on and adjust the time windowinstagram quiet mode toggle

That’s how you can manually set up Quiet mode. Once enabled, it will automatically turn on Quiet mode during the specified times.

Additionally, Instagram will prompt you at other times to enable Quiet mode.

Quiet mode is a nice quality-of-life addition to Instagram. It can help you avoid the lure of the platform by eliminating constant notifications.

And when Quiet mode ends, you’ll get a summary of all the notifications and anything you missed while you’re gone.

It’s pretty easy to set up, so check out Quiet mode to take a break from the constant connection.

Instagram is one of the most popular social networks out there, but with that popularity comes a ton of trolls and just plain mean people.

These types of people can tarnish your experience on the platform, but there is something you can do to avoid some of the toxicity that you might encounter on your own posts.

READ MORE: How to appear offline in Instagram

If you want to improve your Instagram experience by blocking certain words, phrases, and emojis, we will show you how to do that below.

You can block certain words and phrases on Instagram – here’s how

If you want to block certain things from your posts, Stories, and DMs on Instagram, muting these words is a great first step.

Thankfully, you can do this in just a couple of steps:

  1. Press on the hamburger menu from your profile pagehow to hide likes on instagram

  2. Select Settings -> Privacyinstagram hidden words how to

  3. Then, tap on Hidden Wordsinstagram hidden words feature

  4. Scroll down to Custom words for messages and commentshide comments filter

  5. Tap Manage custom words and phrases and add anything you would like to include (separate entries with commas)how to block words and phrases

  6. Once you’ve added everything, make sure to toggle on Hide comments and Hide message requests to activate the featuretoggle options for blocked words

Once you have completed these steps, you will have successfully blocked hateful or triggering words and phrases from appearing in comments and message requests.

Much like the ability to mute words on Twitter, this feature can bring some much-needed peace of mind to your browsing experience.

Let Instagram choose what to block

While setting custom words and phrases is probably the best course of action, Instagram has auto-filtering options that seem to do a decent job of keeping unneeded garbage away from you.

This section is also found under the Hidden Words menu option; you can see the screen above.

This is also a nice way to block spam message requests, so we recommend turning that option on at the very least.

The post Sony looks to the future with more PS5-only games in 2023 appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
It looks like the time has finally come for Sony to put the PlayStation 4 back on its shelf and focus on PS5 development.

A recent video on the official PlayStation YouTube channel hypes up a bunch of the games that are coming to PlayStation in 2023.

Those with a keen eye will notice something interesting when watching the video. Of the 23 games showcased in the video, 15 were tagged with “Coming to PS5 Only” at the bottom.

That leaves only eight of the games PlayStation showed off as coming to the PlayStation 4.

Several of the more anticipated titles, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy XVI, and Dead Space, are only coming to PS5.

PS4 gamers aren’t completely left in the dark, however. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Hogwarts Legacy, and a few more highly-anticipated titles are still coming to PS4 this year.

But it looks like Sony is ready to phase out the PS4 in favor of the latest generation console. The shift has been slower than in the past, mostly due to the high demand and struggling supply of new PS5 consoles.

However, it’s finally getting easier to find a PS5. And the performance upgrades of the PS5 over the PS4 give developers a lot more room for improvement in their games.

For those still gaming on a PS4, your options will start becoming more and more limited. It might finally be a good time to make the upgrade to PS5.

If you’re into smart speakers and somehow don’t own an Alexa or Google Assistant device, Apple wants you to know that they have a thing that exists.

No, not the HomePod Apple discontinued back in 2021. Instead, it’s the HomePod 2, the smart home assistant they quietly launched earlier in the week.

The second generation device officially launches on February 3rd and will cost $299.99. But you don’t have to wait until February to place your orders because a handful of retailers will let you preorder it now.

So if you have $300 to burn and want to upgrade your smart home audio setup, here are a few options to place your order and avoid a trip to the Apple Store.

Instagram’s latest update to improve how people interact with the platform comes in the form of a new “Quiet” mode.

Announced in a blog post, Quiet mode will give users the ability to quickly turn off notifications and send auto-replies to direct messages (DMs).

Users using Quiet mode will also get a badge on their Instagram page, letting others know they aren’t receiving notifications.

Additionally, for teen users on the app, Instagram will prompt teens to enable the mode at night after spending a certain amount of time on the app.

The system is not completely automatic, however. Users will be able to set up restrictions and guidelines for when Quiet mode hours occur.

At present, Quiet mode is rolling out in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Additional locations are to follow.

In addition to the new Quiet mode, Instagram is also expanding ways for people to manage recommendations.

This includes the ability to hide multiple posts at once from the Explore page and an improved Hidden Words feature.

Apple reportedly working on an iPad-based smart home display https://knowtechie.com/apple-reportedly-working-on-an-ipad-based-smart-home-display/ https://knowtechie.com/apple-reportedly-working-on-an-ipad-based-smart-home-display/#respond Thu, 19 Jan 2023 14:43:20 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=269747 It's likely coming sometime in early 2024.

The post Apple reportedly working on an iPad-based smart home display appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
New rumors in the Apple camp suggest that the company is working on an iPad-based display meant to mount or store in your home as a smart home display.

The rumor comes from Bloomberg’s Marc Gurman, a trusted insider with Apple information. Details on the potential device are scarce, but Gurman says it could come out as early as the first half of next year.

Apple’s smart display will reportedly use magnetic mounts for mounting on walls or other areas of the home. There will likely be some sort of docking station or speaker/charger that the device will mount to, as well.

The purpose of Apple’s home iPad is allegedly to act as a smart home display. You’ll be able to use it for FaceTime calls and to help control other smart devices in your home.

Gurman also notes that Apple is working on an updated Apple TV device with faster processing. That device is also supposedly coming sometime in the first half of 2024.

Additionally, the company is considering larger smart home displays for its product line, sources tell Gurman. The products will likely be Matter enabled, like the newly revealed HomePod.

Of course, these are still rumors at this point, and there is still plenty of time for what we’ve heard to change. But keep an eye out for a new iPad-like smart display for your home from Apple next year.

Amazon puts an end to its AmazonSmile charity program https://knowtechie.com/amazon-puts-an-end-to-its-amazonsmile-charity-program/ https://knowtechie.com/amazon-puts-an-end-to-its-amazonsmile-charity-program/#respond Thu, 19 Jan 2023 14:20:50 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=269759 The program was first revealed in 2013.

The post Amazon puts an end to its AmazonSmile charity program appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
After nearly ten years and almost $500 million donated, Amazon has announced that it will shut down its AmazonSmile charity program by February 20, 2023.

With AmazonSmile, users could have a small portion (.5%) of their purchase price go to various charities. In fact, there were approximately 1 million to choose from.

And it’s that wide range of options that helped lead to the shutdown. Essentially, with so many to choose from, no single charity received an impactful amount of donations.

amazonsmile program
Screenshot: Amazon

Amazon’s announcement helps solidify that reasoning. In it, the company notes:

“[T]he program has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped. With so many eligible organizations—more than 1 million globally—our ability to have an impact was often spread too thin.”

Not all is terrible, however. The company plans to give all participating organizations a one-time donation equivalent to “three months of what they earned in 2022.”

It’s unclear if Amazon will relaunch AmazonSmile (or a similar program) in the future. If so, expect to see a much more limited range of choices.

Additionally, the company has made it clear that it will continue to support a variety of organizations, including the Housing Equity Fund, Community Delivery Program, and Amazon Disaster Relief.

Twitter Blue finally lands on Android devices https://knowtechie.com/twitter-blue-lands-on-android/ https://knowtechie.com/twitter-blue-lands-on-android/#respond Thu, 19 Jan 2023 13:37:52 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=269728 It will cost $11 a month, the same price featured on iOS.

The post Twitter Blue finally lands on Android devices appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Twitter users on Android finally have the ability to subscribe to Twitter Blue directly from the app.

The change was first noticed on the Twitter Blue help page, which details parts of the service. According to the page, it will cost Android users $11 a month, the same price iOS users pay.

With Twitter Blue, users get a verified checkmark and longer video uploads. Additional features, like reply priority, are also in the works.

twitter blue pricing android
Screenshot: Twitter

This change comes at the same time the company started offering an annual subscription with a cheaper price through web.

At present, the lower annual price is not available on Android and iOS, and we assume that is intentional. Both Google and Apple take cuts of in-app purchases.

By offering this lower price on web, Twitter can lure people over and avoid an approximate 30% cut that these companies typically take on purchases.

So, anyways, yeah, that’s the news. Android users can now spend their hard-earned money on a blue checkmark for Twitter. Congrats.

Short on time? Jump ahead

Valve’s Steam Deck is one of the most innovative introductions to PC gaming in a long time.

Now that the handheld console is readily available to more people, companies are starting to release more accessories.

The Steam Deck itself is an all-in-one gaming PC right in the palm of your hands. That means you technically don’t need accessories to game on the Steam Deck.

But most gamers know good accessories can greatly improve your gaming experience.

How we make our picks

So, how did we choose all the best Steam Deck accessories to include in this list? It’s easy – we personally tested many on the list.

On top of that, we spent hours researching user reviews, Reddit posts, YouTube videos, and more. But mainly, our first-hand experience is ultimately how we drafted our picks.

The best Steam Deck accessories

From headsets to portable keyboards, you can pair tons of accessories with the Steam Deck. But which ones should you get? This post will answer that below.

So let’s see what kind of accessories are out there.

Short on time? Jump ahead

Anker 7-in-1 USB-C Hub

anker 7-in-1 hub
Image: KnowTechie

Kicking things off in our list of Steam Deck accessories, this Anker 7-in-1 Hub can take Steam Deck gaming to a different level.

Valve has its own docking option mentioned below that lets you connect your Steam Deck to a TV and game, similar to the Nintendo Switch.

But Valve’s dock is a bit more expensive than the Anker 7-in-1 hub. Anker’s option features an HDMI hookup to connect a monitor and pass-through charging via USB-C for just $34.99.

Official Steam Deck Docking Station

If you are looking for a way to easily connect the Steam Deck to a monitor or want a way to charge the handheld conveniently, the Steak Deck Docking Station is perfect.

For $89, you get two USB ports, an HDMI port, USB-C, and an ethernet port. Now that anyone can buy a Steam Deck, we highly recommend checking out this option from Valve if you want more functionality from your gaming handheld.

Unitek Cooling Dock Pro

With so much tech packed into a small case, the Steam Deck can occasionally get pretty hot. Unitek has created its own solution with the Cooling Dock Pro.

The Unitek Cooling Dock Pro works like most other docking stations, with passthrough charging, HDMI output, and a LAN port for wired internet.

But where it stands apart is the included thermoelectric cooler. It uses a metallic contact plate and a cooler on the back to help keep your Steam Deck cooler during those intense gaming sessions.

The Unitek Cooling Dock Pro is available on the Unitek website for $119.

Omni Mobile 25,600mah power bank

omnicharge 25600 power bank

You will definitely want a portable power bank to pair with your Steam Deck.

The battery on the Steam Deck will drain pretty quickly when playing some more demanding games. This 25,600mah power bank from Omnicharge should keep you going for a while.

READ MORE: Can Steam Deck play Minecraft?

This power bank provides a charging output of up to 60W via USB-C, which should your device pretty quickly.

And there are multiple ports, so you can charge multiple devices simultaneously. You can get this power bank from Omnicharge from Amazon for $149.99.

Anker 20,000mah power bank

anker 20000 mah power bank

You can also find a portable power bank for a little bit cheaper. This option from Anker offers a similar 20,000mah capacity battery at a much lower price.

But it is a bit slower than the previous option, outputting at a maximum of 20W. So you might have to wait a little longer to charge your Steam Deck up using this option.

Still, the 20,000mah capacity should give you a couple of full charges on your Steam Deck to keep playing beyond the initial battery life.

The Anker 20,000mah portable power bank is available on Amazon for $69.99.

DLseego TPU protective shell case

Depending on how clumsy you are with your electronics, you might want to outfit your Steam Deck with a protective case.

The DLseego TPU protective case is a good affordable option. It offers a decent level of protection from scratches and light impacts.

The TPU material is what’s typically found in many smartphone cases and offers a flexible but durable design.

It also features a non-slip grip material on the handles of your Steam Deck for a little extra security.

The DLseego case is available on Amazon for just $16.99. Click the button below to check it out.

The JSAUX standing case offers a similar TPU shell as the DLseego above. But JSAUX added a stand to this one in case you wanted to game hands-free on your Steam Deck.

This case offers an ergonomic grip with texturing on either side to help you grip your Steam Deck.

But what stands out the most (pun shamelessly intended) is the flip-out stand that lets the Steam Deck stand up by itself.

This case could make things much easier if you’re playing Steam Deck with a mouse and keyboard. Check out the JSAUX stand case on the JSAUX website.

The Penrose features Bluetooth, so you don’t have to worry about buying any extra accessories to work with the Steam Deck.

The headset is lightweight and features a powerful battery that will keep you gaming for hours.

And its planar drivers offer incredible sound both in games and when listening to music. The Audeze Penrose is a great-sounding headset that would work well with the Steam Deck.

SteelSeries Arctis 7+ wireless gaming headset

SteelSeries’ Arctis line of headsets remains one of the most comfortable headsets I’ve tried to date. However, one issue with the headset is that it lacks Bluetooth connectivity.

You’ll need to use the USB-C port on the Steam Deck or something like the Anker 7-in-1 Hub mentioned above to connect the headset.

If you decide to use your Steam Deck docked with a hub like that, then you definitely can’t go wrong with the SteelSeries Arctis 7+.

The H3 Hybrid offers great sound and comfort like the other headsets mentioned above.

But one cool thing about the H3 Hybrid is that it can connect to two devices simultaneously.

You can connect it wired via USB and wireless via Bluetooth simultaneously to listen to two devices at once.

That could be convenient, for instance, if you were talking on the phone and playing the Steam Deck at the same time.

The H3 Hybrid also features a detachable boom microphone, so you can turn it into a lower profile pair of headphones for when you’re out gaming on the go with your Steam Deck.

The EPOS H3 is available at Amazon for $179.

The Aerox 3 is an ultra-lightweight mouse that’s relatively small in size, so you can take it anywhere. And it connects via Bluetooth, so you don’t have to worry about extra accessories.

And to cap things off, the Aerox 3 has an incredible battery that can keep you going for weeks. I’m a big fan of the Aerox 3, and it seems like the perfect mouse to pair with your Steam Deck.

The G305 features six programmable buttons with onboard memory for settings. And the G305 also has an impressive battery rated for up to 250 hours of use on a single charge.

The only downside to the G305 for the Steam Deck is that it lacks Bluetooth connectivity.

You will need to connect the included dongle to hook this mouse up to your Steam Deck, which means you’ll need something like the Anker Hub mentioned above.

But the G305 is relatively affordable, at just $49.99 on Amazon.

Cooler Master SK622 Wireless

As is the case with gaming mice, so many games in the Steam library work much better with a keyboard.

But the Steam Deck is still designed for mobile gaming, so a mobile keyboard is what you need. And Cooler Master delivers with the SK622 wireless keyboard.

This particular keyboard is a 60% design. So, not only is it missing the number pad on the right side, but it also packs all necessary keyboard keys into one of the smallest form gaming keyboards you can find.

And it connects with Bluetooth. So you don’t have to worry about keeping up with a dongle or buying an extra gadget to make it compatible with your Steam Deck.

The SK622 from Cooler Master is available on Amazon for $115.

SteelSeries Apex 3 TKL keyboard

Another great mobile keyboard option is the Apex 3 TKL from SteelSeries.

This keyboard is a little bigger than the SK622 mentioned above, but it’s still a small, lightweight option compared to other gaming keyboards.

The Apex 3 TKL features IP32 waterproof protection, protecting it from water splashes and dust buildup.

That makes it a good option for gaming on the go in environments that aren’t necessarily controlled. However, there is one flaw with the Apex 3 TKL when pairing it up with a Steam Deck.

And you guessed it, no Bluetooth. The Apex 3 is a wired keyboard, so you’ll need something like the Anker Hub mentioned above to add USB ports to connect this keyboard.

The Apex 3 TKL is affordable, at just $44.99 on Amazon.

Xbox Core Wireless controller

While the Steam Deck does have its own onboard controller, you won’t always want to pick it up.

The smaller thumbsticks aren’t the easiest to use either, so you might prefer a dedicated controller.

You can’t beat using an Xbox controller for all those times you’re docked to play on a larger screen.

Many of the games in your library support one, it’s ergonomic and has superior quality thumbsticks, and it works either wired or by Bluetooth.

AOpen 15.6″ portable monitor

Now, we’re going to check out a couple of monitors you can pair with the Steam Deck.

The AOpen 15.6″ portable monitor is a great option for portable gaming. This is a 15.6″ monitor with its own stand that you can set up anywhere.

And it has a USB-C port for display, so you won’t need anything extra to hook up your Steam Deck.

The AOpen monitor does require a power supply, so its portability is somewhat limited.

And if you connect it directly to your Steam Deck, you won’t be able to use the Steam Deck‘s USB-C port for charging. So you will be limited by the device’s battery unless you use additional hardware.

You can get this AOpen 15.6″ portable monitor on Amazon for $275.

And the last things we want to cover aren’t necessarily accessories, but they’ll definitely improve your Steam Deck.

Depending on the size Steam Deck you went with, you may need extra storage sooner rather than later.

With this 64GB microSD from Lexar, you can store a few extra games over the initial capacity of your device.

And at only $10, you can even snag multiple of these cards to fill up with games and switch them in and out whenever you’d like.

This 512GB option from Samsung will give you a little more room to play.

You can fit several additional games on your Steam Deck with half a terabyte of extra storage.

The more storage you have the better. Nobody wants to uninstall and reinstall games constantly because they don’t have enough storage.

The Samsung EVO 512 GB microSD costs $74.99 on Amazon.

And finally, we’ve got the big one. This 1TB of storage offers twice as much storage as the Samsung option mentioned above. Even the largest Steam Deck only comes with 512GB of storage.

Adding this 1TB microSD from SanDisk will triple the number of games you can install on your device.

That should keep you going for a long time. Although some of today’s games are absolutely massive, so you still might fill that up quickly.

This 1TB microSD from SanDisk will run you $174.99 on Amazon.

Ugreen Nexode 140W USB-C GaN Charger

It’s no secret the Steam Deck commands a lot of power. And if you’re playing it mobile, you’re eventually going to need to recharge it. This is where the Nexode 140W USB-C GaN charger comes in.

Instead of waiting for your regular charger to juice up the Steam Deck, this charger can get it done in half the time.

The charger uses GaN technology, which generates a high-efficiency charge with less heat. This new technology is gaining popularity as it can deliver more power to devices than traditional chargers.

What would normally take your Steam Deck an hour to charge, this Nexode 140W can get it done in just 30 minutes or less.

GuliKit (no drift) Type A Electromagnetic Joystick Module

Stick drift is a big issue, especially on smaller joysticks like those on the Steam Deck. These replacement joysticks fix drift once and for all because they use the hall effect for sensing.

Because they use magnets, they won’t wear like normal joystick modules. These units are only for Steam Decks using Type A sticks, so head to Settings, System, Steam Deck Controller ID, and make sure it starts with MEDA before you purchase.

You’ll also need a soldering iron to install them. We recommend finding a professional to swap if you’re not comfortable, as your Steam Deck wasn’t cheap.

Apple AirTag

This might not be an exciting accessory but it could prove to be a very necessary one. The Steam Deck is portable, and the last thing you want is to lose it somewhere.

So why not throw an AirTag in the case to help you keep track? Or go even further and slip the AirTag inside the Steam Deck itself.

And no, we’re not joking. One Redditor discovered there’s enough room to slip an AirTag inside the Steam Deck, thanks to Valve’s willingness for self-repair.

Just be sure not to interfere with any circuits inside the device, and you should be good to go. You can even use a little electrical tape as a safety measure.

When Google ended Stadia in January 2023, many wondered what would come of their old Stadia controllers. Fortunately, the company pushed a last-minute update so your Stadia controller could live on.

Google updated the Stadia controller to add Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity, meaning you can pair and use the controller with compatible Bluetooth LE products.

This update overrides Google’s original proprietary WiFi connection for its Stadia devices. It replaces that with the more common Bluetooth connection, so you can use the controller even after Stadia’s demise.

You do have to install an update for this feature, but the process is pretty simple. Here’s how to do it.

How to update a Stadia controller to Bluetooth

If you want to take advantage of this update, you’ll need to install it before December 31, 2023. The update will not be available after that.

The update process is pretty simple. You only need a computer with Google Chrome version 108 or later, a USB cable, and your Stadia controller.

  1. Press and hold the Stadia button on your controller until the light turns onstadia controller stadia button

  2. Plug your controller into your PC with the USB cable

  3. Navigate to stadia.google.com/controller in Google Chromestadia controller website bluetooth update

  4. Follow Google’s on-screen instructions to install the update

Google’s prompts will take you through a couple of additional steps, including unplugging and plugging the controller and a couple of various button presses.

Once completed, you will have successfully updated your Stadia controller. Now you can connect the Stadia controller wirelessly to any Bluetooth LE device.

To pair, hold the Stadia button and the Y button for two seconds until you see a pulsing orange light. Then find the Stadia controller on the Bluetooth list of whatever you’re connecting to, and you’re good to go.

Your controller lives on with Bluetooth

This is a really nice Stadia controller update from Google. Unfortunately, Stadia didn’t work out how the company planned, but at least we can still use the controller.

Even better, you were likely completely refunded if you originally purchased the controller from the Google Store. So, now you have a free Bluetooth controller that you can use whenever you want.

Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot is an impressive piece of tech, and a new video from the company shows it is only getting better. Or worse, depending on who you talk to.

The Atlas robot has been shown off time and time again, and each time it gains some new functionality.

Now, the terrifying amazing robot has added grabbing and throwing things to its bag of tricks.

Sure, the demo shows a helpful robot tossing some tools to a colleague. But how many steps are we away from Atlas throwing a person through a fucking wall?

Then, to celebrate a successful toss, Atlas knocks over a box and does a sick inverted 540-degree flip onto it.

Again, cool as hell. But also, that box could be your head and you could be the victim of a Mortal Kombat-esque Fatality disguised as a Fortnite dance.

Just something to consider.

💡 Want to go down the technological doomsday rabbit hole even further? How about an AI that can mimic a person’s voice with only three seconds of audio samples?
